Ellie the elephant, also known as Ubuntu, was sadly rejected by his herd shortly after being born. He was rescued by Karen Trendler and the staff at Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in South Africa.
Things looked promising for Ellie. EarthTouch News produced a short clip showing Ellie’s progress and his wonderful relationship with the resident dog Duma.
However, things took a turn for the worse and Ellie’s health deteriorated.
‘Just as Ellie started really gaining weight, energy and was well on the road to recovery….seven days ago,we had a major setback.’
‘Ellie deteriorated rapidly – septicaemia, high fever, rapid weight loss, severe watery diarhoea, ventral oedema, low blood proteins – it has been seven traumatic days of very very intensive nursing and treatment with eight steps forward and ten steps back. Nothing seemed to be working.’ – Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage on January the 26th, 2016.
Then the dreaded and truly terrible news was posted two days later:
Having invested so much time, energy and hope into keeping Ellie alive, we can only imagine how difficult it must have been to say goodbye to such a brave little elephant.
