Watch: Hyena Steals Impala From Python

Famous for their scavenging abilities, hyenas will eat almost anything, regularly dining out on the leftovers of other predators. This particular hyena, however, wasn’t going to wait for the leftovers, slowly creeping up to an African rock python (Python sebae) before snatching its impala kill.

Trail guide Jason Joubert said of the sighting, “I was ecstatic! In 13 years of guiding, I had never seen anything like this, I was just bummed that the python lost its kill after a lot of hard work though.”

Unfortunately, having done the hard part, the python had to slither away hungry.

Although known for their scavenging, hyenas are also formidable hunters that will take down wildebeest or antelope. This spotted hyena (crocuta crocuta) is the largest of the three hyena species. Brown (Hyaena brunnea) and striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) making up the other two.
